Movie Review: King Arthur

Thursday, July 22, 2004

On the way to work this morning, I was driving behind a police car and I noticed on the rear windscreen, SMS POLIS 39988. Wow! I didn’t know that our Police force are keeping with the times. That got me thinking, how does this sms service work? Do I just write a message and wait for their response? or is it more like an info-line service? It’s 70 cents per sms anyways, must as well just call 999.

Went to the movies yesterday with Shan. Reuben, Aravind and Karu to watch King Arthur. I heard a lot of bad reviews prior to the movie and thus, my expectations of the movie have been lowered. The movie is set in 452 AD where, Arthur is a conscript in the army of the Holy Roman Empire and is assigned to protect a Roman outpost at Hadrian's Wall with his knights Lancelot, Gawain, Galahad, and Bors from the threat of Woad barbarians (led by Merlin). The story gets interesting when, a Roman bishop shows up on the day before Arthur and his knights are to earn their freedom, and sends them on a dangerous mission deep into Woad territory and if that’s not bad enough, the Saxons are invading from the north, killing everything in their path.

The movie is not as bad as I expected. The story is actually not too bad but the fact that it’s suppose to be an ‘epic’ film doesn’t quite click. The battle scenes are tame compared to the likes of LOTR or Gladiator, and the characters are not really well developed, hence the audience doesn’t get the feel of the characters. Of course there must be one comedian in the movie, and this comes from likes of the bear like Bors. Take note on how he calls his children. Overall, the movie isn’t all that bad and it’s actually quite entertaining if you don’t expect too much from it.
